Resolved: what is the blank square to the left of the 'New' icon used for?

The blank square to the left of the New icon has the pop-up text "No connection match". What is it used for?

It is the connection indicator. Preferences -> Appearance -> Connection indicator

I like Set editor background color on and Set toolbar indicator off, but there are many options.
