Couldn't log back on

I've just tried to reconnect to a database (I'd been logged off, due to inactivity) but the reconnect failed reporting that it couldn't connect to a database whilst a process was executing
but I couldn't terminate execution (or close the executing program window) because I wasn't logged on.
