Connect as Main

Recent Connections, right click, Connect as Main

If saved password is incorrect, the action above does not produce ORA-01017 and does not bring up the login window

It works correctly when Connect is chosen instead of Connect as Main.

Could you also change how the window connection is shown? The old model, where current window connection is at the top of the main application window, is definitely the best. This actually is the most important piece of the connection information and it's shown in grey in status line? It's a total disaster. Main connection highlighted in the navigator is more than enough.
Also is there a way to DO NOT store window connections on closing the app? I am working in a multi-database environment with almost daily changing passwords and opening the Developer is a real pain.

And on a more personal note - I am using PL/SQL Developer since v 3 and for the very first time I hate a new feature you introduced. Copycat from SQL Developer and very poorly implemented.

You might want to consider using colours to identify your users. In that case the connection information will be shown in the colour you picked for that connection (user interface, appearance), still below the window. I am using the new version for more than 2 months now and got used to the differences after about a week, but I am using the tool only since version 5.

If you do not want all window connections to start when opening the Developer you need to stop using "autosave desktop" in user interface, options. Disadvantage will be that your windows do not open at the start. Alternatively you could "crash" your application, it will then open with all windows but with only the one connection you chose at the start.

I also would prefer to use autosave desktop without opening all window connections. It looks like a waste of resources to me.
