Cannot connect to database.

Heres my issue. I just loaded Oracle 10g and PL/SQL Developer 5.1.3 on my XP 64 machine. I can connect and query the database using my tnsnames.ora file in SQL Plus, however I cannot connect using PL/SQL Developer. It wont even see the tnsnames.ora entries. Any ideas?

Did you look into your Oracle Home settings in Pl/Sql Developer? What home is it using? (menu: Help/support info). Is it using the same Oracle Home as your SQLPlus?

Yeah, my oracle Home is: D:\oracle and my SQLPATH is D:\oracle\dbs. I updated the Oracle Home under the options tab in preferences in PL\SQL Developer. I still do not see the tnsnames.ora entries.

Does PL\SQL Developer work with windows xp 64? I just installed version 6.05.926 thinking 5.1.3 wasnt compatible and it doesnt work either. Also, I just reinstalled Oracle 10g Client and SQL Plus works beautifully.

I repointed PL\SQL Developer to the correct reinstalled OraHome. Now it sees the tns names, but I get the following error:

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified.

Any help?

What do you have in the sqlnet.ora as a value of the parameter NAMES.DEFAULT_DOMAIN ? You could try to add the default domain after your tns-alias (like aap.nl.oracle.com where nl.oracle.com is the default domain) or place a '#' before the parameter in the sqlnet.ora to switch of the parameter.
Besides that you should review and test the tnsnames.ora entry. Do you have exactly one oracle home? So you're sure that when you start sqlplus that you get the sqlplus from that specific oracle-home?
If you have multiple homes another advice I can give is place the tnsnames.ora and sqlnet.ora in a separate folder. C:\oracle\product\admin\network is a good place, given the file-architecture of oracle.
Then add in the oracle homes in the registery a string value 'TNS_ADMIN' with value 'C:\oracle\product\admin\network'.

Resolving this issue is a matter of Review and deduction. And it can be a tedious job.

Martien

Version 5.1.3 is indeed incompatible with 10g. You will need 5.1.6 or later.

The problem with Windows XP64 is probably the installation directory. It is "c:\program files (x86)" by default, and Oracle Net does not like parentheses in the working directory. You need to uninstall and reinstall in a directory without parentheses.
