Hi,

So I have this problem for a long long time. Just now it got on my nerves and I decided to try and do something about it.

The PLSQL Developer Freezes a lot during the day. Each freeze lasts about 30 seconds to even 2 minutes.
The freeze seems unrelated to anything, It can be on query submission, on simply switching windows, on copying text, on invoking auto complete, on starting up explain plan, on clicking any button really. it seems to happen on random events sometimes unrelated to network, querying, CPU or anything.
Video example of a freeze during explain plan startup

And its not that the DB is slow, the plan takes time or anything. if I use Toad for example that plan would take 2 seconds to come back.

Can this problem be solved?

thank you!

I see that this happened in the video when opening a new Report Window. The Report Window has appeared, but it is not yet displayed in the Window List.

Can you go to Help > Support Info and send me the information from the "Info" tab page by e-mail? We can then send you instructions to obtain more diagnostic information.

To obtain some more diagnostic information, can you modify the PL/SQL Developer shortcut and add the DebugSQL parameter? For example:

"C:\Program Files\PLSQL Developer 13\plsqldev.exe" DebugSQL

Reproduce the problem and send me the debug.txt file that is generated in directory "C:\Users\G520844\AppData\Roaming\PLSQL Developer 13".

I have a bit different problem.
1. When the PLSQL Developer Freezes It freezes also the whole desktop. I'm unable to click on any other program. When ver. 14 was freezing (due to recompiling many objects on base) then I could switch to another program. Now the whole Windows freeze. Looks like ver 15 is more connected with widows.
2. When I minimize and then maximize the PLSQL Dev it first shows black widows, then it begines to slowly refresh widows. It takes from 2 seconds to 10 seconds. Looks like that the longer it is PLSQL Dev out of focus the longer it takes to reassembe it. My computer is a few years old but quite strong, it should work better.

I experience point 2. of @matejj everytime PSD is minimized. The redraw of PSD when maximized takes couple of seconds showing black ribbon and SQL zone.

My colleague reported freezes in PLSD. We tried to remove git directories in "Files" tab and freezes are gone. Maybe it helps.

Similar hangs here, but *not* using version control in PSD.

Page goes grey and Windows sometimes asks if want to kill or wait for it to complete.

We also occasionally lose icons and names in the left-hand panels e.g Files. We can still see the folder structure, but the item icon and file name is missing. This usually proceeds a crash from PSD that generates a support email and then it gets into a loop of crashing and emailing.

I also get this freezing. I noticed even more when I have multiple instances opened, but is not a memory problem. I think is some kind of performance problem with the UI refresh. Aparently

I have been using version 15 for about a week now. It has occasionally crashed without any warning or messages. Today, it often "freezes".

The freeze occurs when I have a syntax error in my SQL and click run. It takes a minute or two before I get the Error window. The status bar says "Initializing..." the entire time. When the error window appears, the status bar says "Executing...". When I click OK on the error, it takes another minute or two before the "spinning wheel" cursor goes away so I can do anything in PL/SQL Developer. The status bar continues to say "Executing..." during this wait.

My computer is not affected. I can access anything on my other monitor and move it over the PL/SQL Developer window. Everything works and performs as usual.

Eventually, the freeze ends, and I have access again. This issue needs to be resolved ASAP as I can't wait five minutes every time I type something wrong.

Windows 11 was updated last night and that update may be related to the problem.

Version 15.0.2.2054 (32 bit)
Style: Windows 11 Dark
Windows 11 (64-bit) Build 22000
en-US(1033)/English (United States)

Physical memory : 50,246,588 kB (33,467,456 available)
Paging file : 57,586,620 kB (37,889,656 available)
Virtual memory : 2,097,024 kB (1,442,304 available)

Preferences
Session mode: Multi
OCI Library: <none>
Use OCI7: False
Allow Multiple Connections: True

Version 15 does keep my connection alive so I had to log in today. PL/SQL Developer no longer has the "freeze" behavior. The computer has not rebooted or had any other changes made. The only difference was the need to log in.

For me performance improved and freezes seem gone after: Setting "None" for Light and Dark Style in configuration at: user interface - appearance - Color Theme mode of version 15! I like dark mode and use it for most of my tools, but performance and stability are far more important to me.

Even using the standard interface the freeze exists. I think allround should prioritize this problem, I see that this topic is well seen and commented on. I went back to version 14, the only feature I miss from version 15 is the option to pin the grid

Hello!
For me, the hint proposed above actually worked! There is a noticable difference in performance

Windows 11 was updated last night and that update may be related to the problem.

I now have similar freeze behaviour in Pl/SQL Developer, where the terms "initializing...", "executing..." are what I now get and not sure if PLS update or windows 11 update the cause. I have Windows 11 as well and usually update when updates are available. I notice the hangs mostly when changing the connection from DEV(12.2) to ACC or PRD(19c r2). Sometimes it helps when I click in the PLS application window. Often PLS crashes as well when the freeze occurs.

I have also noticed that PLS crashes when I change the connections from one server to another. I cannot give you a rule, but the fact is that it crashes.
On version 14 this happened more often than in version 15.0.3. I'm sorry that I cannot give you more details.

This issue known for many years. Log off/Log on new base resolves it.
More connections you have before logon to new base (without log off), so more chance to crash.
Pay attention to sessions window after changing connection. All your sessions relogin to new server, and I don't know why. Maybe it is a cause...

I have exactly the same problem. I can't debug the program at all. The whole thing gets stuck. There is a CrossThread error in the Windows event log! I debugged your program using x32dbg. And among other things, you have an error in SetThreadName , Unknown name. this error causes the program to hang often. Unfortunately, it still says Executing... and I wait an infinite time, I have to kill the process. We have purchased this program and I need it to work. I tried all versions from 12 -> 15. Unfortunately, I have Windows 11. And it happened after the last update, the update is KB5021234, I tried to uninstall the update but the problem was not solved. I think the problem is with you and you will have to make better compatibility. If you want contact me at edie.6b@gmail.com. I'll give you a crash dump, logs, whatever.

Is there any news about stability / performance fix we may expect? Especially the freezes are really a pain to deal with everyday. Also the "initializing..." when changing tab connection and "executing..." that doesn't go away unless I close the tab. In my experience after that PLS is in an error state, so close and restart required.

Is this thread still monitored or should I start a new thread? Not sure if this is a Windows 11 update incompatibility or an error introduced in a later version of PSD. In both cases it would be nice if this were sorted out. The freezes are quite often and very annoying.
