I'm using SourceSafe and use .sql extension for script files. In my working directory I notice that a copy of the file is made and a tilda ~ is prefixed on the extension.

script.sql
script.~sql

Is this normal?

This is a backup file with the file contents before the last save. Through the preferences (Tools > Preferences > Backup tab page) you can enable/disable these backups, or specify a location.
