What is a typical setting for ReadBuffer?

I realize that performance will vary according to several factors. But I was hoping to get an idea whether leaving at the default of 25 will work for most situations or whether I should increase it.

The value of 25 is a good general default. Increase it if you expect to fetch a large number of records (> 1000) and minimizing the number of network roundtrips will affect performance significantly.
