Save on compile to the same file

Would it be possible to extend the backup functionality to save executed file to the same file? Or is there any other option for auto-saving a file after/before execution? I edit packages from the filesystem, as I use a CVS repository as a primary package source. I would like to keep package file synchronized with the current package in a DB.
Don't tell me to use macros, because I already do and I don't like it
