Regular Expressions not working in the Search Bar

Is it just me or are Regular Expressions not working in the Search Bar in 7.1.4? For example if I search for [a-z] using the Find And Replace dialog in the main editor window with the Regular Expressions option checked, it finds any alphabetic character, but the same expression (or any expression) in the search bar finds nothing.

I tried restarting with the "noplugins" option in case it was due to something I'd installed, but still nothing. Support info below:
