ORA 12514 - FAQ?

ORA-12514: TNS: listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.

I am running into this problem and have searched the forum and found four other posts with the same problem. The usual response is "send me your 'Support info', and I will look into it."

That is great, but it seems frequent enough that putting the resolution as a response to the post would help everyone.

Anyway, does anyone know the general problem that causes this error (12514), and how I can fix it?

I double checked and found that I received the same error when trying to connect to SQL+

After some other fruitless research. I used the Net Configuration Assistant and reconfigured my listener. It gave me a warning about some setting being in use, and I continued anyway.

After completing the configuration, it appears that there was no change to any of my ora files (listener, tnsnames, sqlnet). However, now I don't receive the error anymore.
