Large data editor, XML tags can be changed, but has no effect

I am editing some XML in the large data editor.

In the XML tab page, to the left in the screen, I can see the XML hierarchy. If I click on a tag name, I can edit it and give it a new name. But the change does not have any effect on the XML code.

Also, if I change e.g. to the Text tab page and back to the XML tab page, the XML hierarchy will show the old tag names, as defined in the unchanged XML code.
