Large data editor question

What is the significance of the "External" tab in the large data editor? What's the relationship between file execution and data?

I think Chapter 19 - "The Large Data Editor" in the User's Guide explains it nicely. Chapter 19.6 - "Invoking an external viewer or editor" covers the External tab page.
