How to use Instant Client with DOA?

I am testing with a virtual machine - no Oracle client installed, I put the files from Instant Client on a folder, then added that folter to system path, as advised by Oracle. My application gives an error, SQL*net not properlly installed ... HomeKey and HomeDir empty. I am using DOA 4.0.7, running on a XP SP2.
