Find & Replace: Amount of characters till cursor

Open the Find and Replace dialog (Ctrl-F).
Click on "Scope" > Selection.

Now click anywhere in a window and you see in the statusbar of the F&R dialog the amount of characters in this window till the cursor? Where can we use it for?
Is this just a debugging label?

Notice that this number stays visible when you select "Global" again.
