Feature Request:

In tools such as Toad you are able to have multiple database connections open at the same time. Then at the top you will have a TAB representing each connection.

I am typically connected to 5-6 databases at the same time. It would be very helpful if PL/SQL developper had this functionality?

Is there any intention on adding it?

We have had more requests to support multiple connections within the IDE, so this may be added in a future release.

Right now you need to open multiple PL/SQL Developer instances.

Marco, buddy,

You posted this in October of 2003:
"We've had a few more requests for this. We are considering an option for 6.0."

I heard similar hopeful words back in 2001.

It's the only show-stopping issue preventing my current employer from approving your product here and trash-canning SQLNavigator.

It's about time.

I like the Mozilla-Firefox tabbed window metaphor as well. Each window could be a separate workspace, or internal "instance" of PSD. I realize it's no small task, but it would probably help sales somewhat if it were on option.

Ever considered a focus group of posters from this forum who could vote on a list of feature requests to help you with priority assignment?

Could this be why Toad won the monst recent Jolt Awards from Software Development magazine? Or did they just stuff the ballot box? :-)

Be careful what you wish for, you might just get it.

If this feature is added, could you also add a Preferences option to turn it off?

Just wanted to add my 2 cents:
Yes, this feature that allows to have multiple connections within 1 instance is really usefull,
however, I personally don't see a big deal to instantiate new instance of IDE and I am using IDE for 6 years.
So from usability stand point it nice , but I would not say "must have", maybe from sales prospective someone would disagree.
I would rather have code folding like in Rational
or utility that build dependency tree within 1 package.
Thanks

I agree with tcogill. If you add that option please include a way to turn it off.

That is the easiest way to make mistakes in my opinion others could disagree but I am made some in my toad time.

Thanks,

Perhaps you guys are in a small environment with not that many databases. When you are in a big environment with 20+ databases then you need some type of feature like this. Otherwise you spend half your day hitting alt-tab.

I disagree. I work in an environment with 300+ databases and find the current functionality perfect for my needs. Having multiple connections present, in my opinion, would lead to an unstable product or worse still, code being run in wrong database. Believe me, it has happened ala TOAD nightmare! I like it the way it is!
