"Cannot compile" during "Compare User Objects". Why?

When trying to compile invalid objects while a "Compare User Objects" is running, you get an error window:

You cannot compile a program unit while one or more windows are still executing

Why is that? A recompile won't change the code, just makes the objects valid again. The compare should only need to read data dictionary data, which shouldn't really conflict with write operations caused by recompile either. So what's the reason for not allowing both at the same time?
