8.0.1 - hint settings being ignored?

I'm using 8.0.1.1502, and it looks like my settings for Preferences->Hints are being ignored. Also, all checkboxes there are grayed out. Clicking them once unchecks them, and again checks them, but nothing seems to get stored and nothing seems to matter.

I installed 8.0.1 on top of the last v7 version.

Does anyone know what's going on?
 
Can you go to Help > Support Info, press the 'Copy all pages' button on this info screen, and paste this text into an e-mail reply?
