We have an windows 7 64 bit issue when we try to install PL/SQL Developer Version 8.0.3.1510.

The 64 bit oracle 11.2 client allows us to connect to our database instances, through sqlplus.

You will need to install a 32 Bit Oracle Client. PL/SQL Developer is a 32 Bit application, so it cannot interface with a 64 Bit Oracle Client.

The 32 Bit Oracle Client can communicate with a 64 Bit Server, even on the same machine if necessary. The 32 Bit client can coexist with a 64 Bit Oracle installation when installed in separate Oracle Home directories.

OK, so where does one obtain this for Oracle XE ? Just trying to save flailing... Also, umm, the error message when the login fails is not very illuminating.

Update: So I installed the XEClient that I downloaded along with the XE server, and it can't do anything under Windows 7. It fails. PL/SQL Developer doesn't even see the TNSNAMES entries it used to show before I installed the XE Client.

Is there something magic I need to know?

You should probably download the latest 32 bit 11g client from the Oracle web site to ensure that it is compatible with Windows 7. It can be downloaded here (2nd download is just the client).
